Here's your checklist to make sure your bike is safe and road-ready |
|
1. Make sure your tires are
inflated to the manufacturer's recommendations. This will be a number on
the sidewall of the tire for example, (min 35/ max 60) or what ever is
actually on the tire. The lower number is for soft surfaces
dirt of gravel and the higher number for hard surface pavement or
road. 2. Brakes: when you apply the
brake, is there about 3/4th of an inch between the lever and
the handle bar. If not it may be time for new pads. Make sure they can
stop the bike! 3. Chains: clean and lube the chain
for the new season, a good Teflon based lube like Tri Flow is a great
lube. 4. Loose parts: Is
the headset adjusted? If you
apply the front brake and there is a feeling of play between the stem and
frame, it may need bearings or adjustment. Hubs, cranks, and pedals should
also be checked for improper play in the bearings of each. 5. Safety: Make sure reflectors are
in place and any night-riding lighting is fully functional as required by
law. Check your helmet for any defects or broken straps and replace
anything that has been damaged. Always obey motor vehicle and
pedestrian traffic rules. Enjoy your riding Russ Padgett PS - If you're not
