Bicycling in Autumn
The cooler weather is here, and it's still a great time to ride your bike. The weather is comfortable, and the scenery is alive with color. Days are shorter, and the climate is cooler, making for a surprisingly great time of year to get out and come alive in nature. Simple preparations can make your afternoon, or even an entire day out, more enjoyable.
Tip #1 - Dress comfortably. Check the weather before riding. Do not "bundle up" because your body will generate heat as you ride. Your should feel tolerably cool the first mile or two. Leave the fleece or warm jacket at home or in the car. Dress in thin layers and consider wearing separate arm and leg warmers. Clothing items can be folded up and stored in a backpack, saddlebag, or in cycling jersey pockets. Wear well-fitting gloves, eye wear, shoes, and helmet.
Tip #2 - Stay Hydrated. Your body needs water just as much in the cooler weather. Pack water bottles like you normally would, or for longer rides, use a Camelback style backpack. Bring a snack for longer rides. Do not drink from streams.
Tip #3 - Bring a Light. It gets dark sooner. Bring a headlight and extra batteries. If riding on a trail, pack a charged cell phone and flashlight. For road riding, supplement your bike's reflectors with a battery-powered tail light to increase drivers' ability to see you.
Tip #4 - Ride Safe! Carry a cell phone, identification, and any medical info. Bring a tube-repair kit or spare tube, tire levers, and a multi tool, all of which can fit in a seat bag. Be alert for fallen branches and wet leaves or even patches of ice. Always wear a helmet.
Cycle Funattic is your family bicycle shop, and we'll be glad to help you accessorize to get the most out of riding in all types of weather. We strongly encourage you to get out and ride in the cooler days of Autumn. You'll fall in love with Fall again.
PS - There are no good excuses not to ride; you deserve this time for yourself ... so go out and enjoy!
Good Riding ... Russ
